Fluid buildup in the lungs can lead to major complications and other problems. Ascertain the cause of fluid buildup in the lungs and how it can affect the body.

Fluid accumulation in the lungs is also referred to as pulmonary edema. It results in the accumulation of fluids within the layers of the tissues that line the lungs and the chest cavity. As a consequence of this condition, gas exchange can get affected and eventually lead to respiratory failure. The cause for this condition could be due to the heart’s inability to remove fluids from lung circulation. This is described as cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Fluid accumulation in the lungs could also be a result of some direct injury to the lung parenchyma. This is described as noncardiogenic pulmonary edema.

Causes of Fluid Build Up in the Lungs

The human body produces a small amount of pleura liquid in order to lubricate the surfaces of the pleura. Pleura refers to the thin tissue that surrounds the lungs and lines the chest cavity. When an abnormal or excessive collection of this fluid occurs, it leads to pleural effusion.

Transudative pleural effusions: When there is an increased pressure within the blood vessels or when their protein content is low, it could lead to transudative effusions. The most common cause for this condition is congestive heart failure. Heart attacks or abnormal heart valves can lead to an abnormal accumulation of blood in the lungs’ blood vessels. This in turn can lead to the excessive fluid build up in the alveoli which will affect the gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Exudative pleural effusions: Some of the causes of exudative pleural effusions are :-

drug reaction

injury to the lungs

inhalation of toxins

blocked blood vessels

kidney failure or kidney diseases

cancer

pulmonary embolism (blockage of lung blood vessels)

viral infection

bacterial pneumonia

High altitude

Symptoms of Fluid Build Up in the Lungs

Some of the symptoms of fluid build up in the lungs include:

shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing

coughing that may produce blood or frothy sputum

excessive sweating

paleness

If the cause is related to cardiac conditions, the patient may suffer from palpitations or chest pain.

restlessness and anxiety

feeling of being deprived of ‘air’ or ‘drowning’. This might happen while the patient is sleeping when he / she suddenly gets up and tries to catch his / her breath. This is described as paroxymal nocturnal dyspnea.

fatigue, dizziness or weakness

Treatment for Fluid Build Up in the Lungs

The treatment options for pulmonary edema will depend on the cause of the condition. Depending on the severity of the condition, the doctor may choose to either hospitalize the patient or treat him / her as an outpatient by prescribing oral medications. If the cause of the pulmonary edema is related to the heart, then appropriate medicines are given to stabilize the heart. Appropriate medications may be prescribed to strengthen the muscles of the heart, regulate its rhythm or to control its pressure. Water pills or diuretics may be given to relieve the body of excess fluids.

Oxygen supplementation might be administered to the patient if the oxygen level in the blood becomes too low. For noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, treatment will be advised according to the cause. For example, if the cause is related to kidney failure or kidney disease, the doctor will take the necessary steps to address these issues. Similarly, antibiotics will be given to the patient to deal with infections if the cause of the fluid retention is due to an infection.

Complications that can arise due to pulmonary edema are severe oxygen deprivation to different organs of the body such as the brain. This will require the patients to use a breathing machine.

Preventing Fluid Build Up in the Lungs

If a person develops pulmonary edema, it is vital to take all medication according to the doctor’s instructions. One should also make a conscious effort to eat healthy and exercise regularly. It is best to avoid smoking. Regular check ups will also help the doctors identify any possible indication of trouble and give timely treatment.

Being over or underweight can lead to various health problems. Get the facts right about maintaining a healthy weight and avoid health issues and complications.

If you’re still wondering why maintaining a healthy weight is important, here are some of the reasons. The fact is you’re never too young or too old to shed or gain the needed pounds.

Risks of Being Overweight

There are numerous problems with obesity. Chief among them is the increased likelihood of getting a heart attack. Contrary to popular belief, strokes are no longer confined to people in their 40s or 50s. Some people in their 30s have suffered cardiac arrests.

The reason is that as young people indulge in junk food and sweets, their cholesterol and fat levels go up. If you are not into maintaining a healthy weight, the fats will result in high blood pressure. This can lead to heart attacks.

Overweight people tend to consume a lot of sweets like chocolates and candies. This increases the sugar level in the blood, leading to diabetes and all its complications.

Tiring Easily

There are other discomforts and troubles with being overweight. You run out of breath quickly. Doing simple things like lifting objects or jogging become difficult tasks. Some overweight people also have trouble sleeping. This can happen because the body is still trying to digest all the food. By maintaining a healthy weight, these problems can be avoided.

Risks of Being Underweight

Weighing less than the ideal is also problematic. Those who weigh less than the recommended amount will be physically weak. Some people might not think that this is a problem if the job is confined to a desk job. However, it can be. Underweight people who work extended hours can suddenly collapse from exhaustion.

While overweight people suffer from high blood, underweight individuals can suffer from low blood levels. This can lead to dizziness and feeling physically weak. The problem is exacerbated because the person gets accustomed to eating less and less. This can seriously affect the individual.

Finding the Right Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight starts with knowing the right level for you. This will depend on your age, gender and in some cases line of work. This latter is important to consider: two people may be of the same height and gender but if one is an athlete and the other is not, their conditioning will be different.

There are several medical / health books that can tell you what your ideal weight should be. But it’s best to consult your physician. Your doctor will then account for all the pertinent factors, including your health. Proceed slowly when you try to add or lose pounds. Starving or overeating isn’t the right way. Allow your body to adjust to your diet.

Keep in mind that tipping the scales right doesn’t require you to put on plenty of muscles (although they can help). As long as you have the right overall level, you’ll be all right.

The advantages of maintaining a healthy weight are numerous. Aside from the ones mentioned above, most people derive emotional satisfaction from being in shape. With benefits all around, it’s a goal everyone should strive to achieve.

In spite of penalties, drunken drivers are still prevalent and cause accidents. By understanding why people drink and drive, you’ll have a greater chance of preventing it from happening to you.

Incidents of alcohol related road accidents are still high. To keep yourself safe, knowing why people drink and drive will be helpful.

Not Feeling Drunk

Part of the problem is that some people believe that they are immune to the effects of alcohol. This is especially true for heavy drinkers. What makes matters worse is that they may have done it in the past without having an accident. This may embolden them to continue doing it.

The most difficult part about this is that people have different tolerance levels. If someone is used to drinking, they do not seem to take what the law says, seriously. If they don’t feel intoxicated, they continue to keep drinking. This is one of the main reasons why people drink and drive.

The problem is that, when you are behind the wheel, your reflexes need to be sharp. Even if you are not aware of it, your reflexes will get slower when you are inebriated. You will not be alert and you will be confused and muddled up, even if you choose to believe otherwise. Driving in this condition, has all the potential of a definite disaster.

Lack of Information

Some people drink and drive because they don’t know any better. Some people are not even aware of the legal drinking limits. New or first time drinkers need to know these facts. Some drinks take a while before the effects are felt. Unfortunately in some cases, the effect kicks in when the person is driving. Statistics show that one of the reasons why people drink and drive is that they are unaware of the consequences.

Brashness

Aside from lack of information, the other problem is the belief that accidents happen to other people only, not them. Some individuals know that they ought not to drive after consumption of alcohol and also that they shouldn’t mix the two, yet, they think that they can do it. Even if you are a careful driver, the effects of alcohol on the body can be overwhelming.

Personal Problems

This is probably one of the most dangerous reasons why people drink and drive. A man / woman in the thick of problems, gets drunk and gets in the car. Caught in his / her emotions, the person doesn’t care what happens anymore. Sadly, among the reasons why people drink and drive, this is a common reason.

One for the Road

After a party, it is hard to resist the temptation to have one more drink. It doesn’t help that the scene is portrayed often in movies and on T.V. It gives some the impression that it is acceptable and that in fact, it is “cool”. Honestly, It is not. While you may be having fun, it can lead to serious accidents with fatal or irreparable consequences.

How to Avoid the Situation

The best way to evade this problem is not to drink, period. If you can’t avoid it, you should get one of those breathalyzers. These are gadgets that determine the alcohol level in your body. If it is above the legal limit, don’t drive. If it is below, then it is safe to drive. If you don’t have that gadget, let someone else drive you home. Needless to say, that person must be sober.

Knowing the facts as to why people drink and drive is important for everyone. It doesn’t just enlighten, but lets you see the dangers that can befall someone who does it.

Today millions of people all over the world are still smoking cigarettes and tobaccos. Develop insights into the reasons as to why people smoke in spite of government / health warnings.

Trying to determine why people smoke can be tough. There is no shortage of medical findings stating its ill effects. Yet they continue to be patronized. The explanations put forward have ranged from psychological to emotional.

Habit

For some individuals, they just do it out of habit. They start lighting it up at an early age (i.e., early teens). By the time they reach adulthood, the desire to quit is no longer there. They’re aware of the medical findings and the risks.

However some feel that it’s “too late to quit”. Even if the threat of illness is there, some have the feeling or assumption that it won’t happen to them. A lifetime habit is one of the explanations as to why people smoke, making it hard for them to quit.

Fashionable

For others, it’s because it looks “cool”. The advertisements and commercials show these people as fun loving, attractive and happy. For young people, this impression can become permanent. It can influence them to take up the habit.

Peer Pressure or Emulation

Yet another reason is peer pressure. Teenagers may be cajoled into lighting a stick to “prove” their manhood. Other young people might do it out of rebellion or in imitation of their parents.

If the parents have the habit, it’s all too easy for the offspring to follow suit. Even if they don’t, their friends might encourage them. As studies have shown, one factor why people smoke is it makes them feel part of the group. They may or may not be aware of the health risks. But to them, acceptance of their peers is more important.

To Relieve Stress

Some individuals claim that the activity helps remove stress. The cigarette break is used by some people to try and relax. According to some smokers, inhaling the smoke makes them feel relaxed. Of course it isn’t just limited to lunch break. It extends to the period after work.

Reward

It is also a form of reward for some. Whether it’s passing a school exam or finishing a tough task at work, some use it as an excuse to light a stick. It gives them a sense of satisfaction. The “emotional high” that one feels is often cited as a reason why people smoke.

Clarify the Mind

Somewhat opposite to the above, some use it to prepare themselves for work. When faced with a lot of workload, these individuals claim that cigarettes help them understand and think more clearly. This works because it helps the mind focus on a solitary point. When they attain this relaxed state, it becomes easier to think.

Pleasure

For some, it just boils down to the experience being enjoyable. Some people can’t stand the smell of smoke, but others revel in it. For them, the joys acquired from the experience outweigh everything else that the medical profession may have to say.

These are just some of the explanations as to why people smoke. In the end, the decision to do it is up to the individual. However, it’s a good idea for people to know all the facts before making a choice.

Being physically fit means more than just looking good. By understanding why fitness is important, you’ll be more motivated to get in shape.

There are numerous reasons given as to why fitness is important. Health / medical journals regularly point out the advantages. The following are just some of the most frequently cited.

Greater Endurance

People who are out of shape tire easily. Whether it’s climbing the stairs or moving furniture around, they get more exhausted. This results in loss of production. If you are in shape, you’ll get more things done in less time.

The endurance benefit doesn’t just refer to physically demanding work. Even when you’re engaged in leisure activities, lack of conditioning will take its toll. Even if you want to relax by taking a stroll around the park, your activity becomes limited because you tire quickly.

Less Prone to Disease

Another, perhaps even more vital reason why fitness is important is it helps fight ailments. By staying in shape, you’ll be less susceptible to diseases. If you’re not in good condition, you’re liable to get hit by common ailments like cold or the flu. This can affect your work. Although a cold may not seem much it tends to linger on people who aren’t in shape.

It’s even more crucial to stay in shape if you are susceptible to hereditary diseases. If your family has a history of heart ailment for instance, all the more you need to stay healthy.

More Active, Less Lethargic

One more reason why fitness is important is it leads to greater activity. As stated, when you’re in shape you’re able to do more things. Your physiology adapts to this routine. Eventually you enjoy doing things. Being active leads to a healthier body overall.

By contrast, unfit people tend to be lethargic. When people know they tire easily, sometimes the tendency is not to do much. What happens is that the body gets accustomed to this. In time, the body and mind will try to resist any form of strenuous activity. The opposite cycle holds true for those who are healthy.

More Focused Mentally

The value of being in shape isn’t confined to the physical aspects. There are links between the physical, emotional and mental aspects in people. If you’re physically healthy, you’ll get to focus more on the tasks at hand. The mental and emotional benefit is another basis for why fitness is important.

If you’re unhealthy, you’ll spend time worrying about this. Not only can it affect work, but worrying itself can lead to illnesses.

Some Reminders

If you want to get in shape, there are several things to consider. Getting into a proper conditioning program requires some research. If you have any ailments or your family is prone to it, check with your doctor first.

Along with exercising, you need to watch your diet too. Cutting down on foods high in cholesterol and sugar is the best way to start. Some also recommend other activities like yoga or meditation. These can help bring emotional and mental calm.

Now that you know why fitness is important, it’s time for you to get in shape. It’s never too late to try it out. In due time, you’ll reap the benefits of being in condition.

Being healthy doesn’t mean eating all the time. Get the essential facts as to why nutrition is important and be a healthier individual.

There are many explanations that can be offered as to why nutrition is important. Some of them are listed below, but the bottom line is it leads to good health.

An Energy Boost

Eating the right amount and type of food will add to your energy level. If you’ve ever had to pass up a meal, you feel weak and even nauseous. By getting the right foods, we give our body energy.

This allows us to work more efficiently. If our bodies were cars, the food we eat is the fuel that drives it. Of course, cars need good fuel types to work. In the same way, our bodies need the right kinds of foods. That is why nutrition is important. If we provide ourselves with the right diet, we’ll be healthier and more productive.

Providing Useful Compounds

When you have the proper nourishment you also get the right types of compounds and elements the body needs. These include carbohydrates. These elements are changed into glucose. In turn these become the energy that drives the body.

Other crucial compounds are proteins. If you eat protein rich food, these are transformed into amino acids. These are the elements that help the body cope with injuries. The more proteins you have, the stronger the resistance of the body. Most of these elements are present in your muscles. Protein also provides a boost for the nerves and several organs in the body.

The right nourishment also gives you plenty of calcium. This is another reason why nutrition is important. Calcium is vital in developing robust bones and teeth. It also helps in promoting good health overall.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are also critical to the body. These have many and varied functions. In general, their main role is to hasten the chemical fusions needed by the system. Vitamin C aids the immune system, B complex is an added energy boost and Vitamin A is good for the eyes. Other vitamins like E and D also have their benefits.

Other essential elements you’ll need are antioxidants. You can get them from green and leafy vegetables. Protection against pollution and unbalanced diets, antioxidants can be found in various fruits.

Effects of an Unbalanced Diet

The reason why nutrition is important can be seen when it is not carried out properly. A person lacking in calcium will have weak bones. Too little protein and you will be sickly and weak. Too much carbohydrates and fats will make you overweight. Lacking in vitamins also brings about risks. Too much or too little of these elements can lead to disease.

One of the problems is that the ill effects can take years to arrive. People who are indulging in sweets now may scoff at the idea of getting sick. Unfortunately when the effects do they take their toll, it can be devastating.

By learning why nutrition is important, you can take the steps needed for getting good health. With a balanced diet, you’ll be healthy and robust for many years.

Smoking is an unhealthy habit that poses serious threats to our health. One of the effects of this practice is the rapid increase in blood pressure. To know why does smoking cause a rise in blood pressure, it is important to learn the impacts of frequent smoking on the efficient functioning of the heart.

Smoking is one of the habits and practices that medical experts oppose because it poses serious threats to human health. Medical studies showed that smoking could cause various deadly diseases such as cancer, strokes as well as stenosis. This habit also affects the efficient functioning of the cardiovcascular system. One of the serious effects of smoking is a rapid increase in blood pressure. Discussed below are the reasons why smoking causes a rise in blood pressure.

Narrowing Blood Vessels

Why does smoking cause a rise in blood pressure? There are various ways smoking cause an increase in blood pressure. One of these is by narrowing the heart blood vessels. Cigarettes and tobaccos have ingredients or elements that affect the effective functioning of the blood vessels. Regular smoking damages and weakens the blood vessels and causes them to narrow. When this occurs, blood flow will be affected and the heart will be stressed since it needs to work harder than the usual to pump blood to the other parts of the body. Whenever the heart is under stress, the blood pressure increases.

Shortage in Oxygen

Inhaling oxygen is important to the survival of humans. Shortage in oxygen can be dangerous to our health. Medical studies showed that smoking causes shortage in the supply of oxygen in the body, which can greatly affect the efficient functioning of the cardiovascular system. Inadequate supply of oxygen causes the heart to work harder to provide sufficient amount of oxygen in the other parts of the body. When the heart pumps harder than the usual, the cardiovascular system is affected. Thus, a rapid increase in blood pressure occurs.

Inflammation and Plaque

Another reason why medical experts oppose smoking is that this unhealthy practice causes plaque build-up in blood vessels. Aside from this, the habit also destroys the linings of the heart blood vessels. When the linings were damaged, inflammation of the blood vessels will happen. Build-up of plaque and inflammation of the vessel are risk factors to increased blood pressure.

Long-Term Effects of Smoking on Blood Flow

Smokers should be aware of the long-term effects of the unhealthy habit on their health. Cigarettes and tobaccos have chemicals that cause the fibrinogen and blood cholesterol levels to rise. When these happen, they may experience heart attacks because increased levels of blood cholesterol and fibrinogen affects the blood clotting mechanism of the body. Heart attacks can cause high blood pressure and other serious illnesses such as aneurysm, coronary heart disease, stroke as well as peripheral vascular disease.

Having bent pinky fingers is a usual symptom of camptodactyly. This is a condition where there is a deformity in the fingers. You should seek the help of a medical professional for both mild and severe cases of this condition.

You might wonder why some have bent pinky fingers. You’ll find that there are people with pinky fingers that are more severely bent than others. The interesting thing is that if you have someone who has bent pinky fingers you are likely to find an ancestor of his that has the same condition. This condition is called camptodactyly and is a condition that is hereditary.

Defining the Condition

In layman’s terms, camptodactyly is the condition where there is a deformity in the fingers. Other people may have it on other fingers on their hands but you will usually find evidence of this on the pinky fingers. Such deformed fingers are usually bent either severely or just slightly.

A common occurrence among such cases is that these deformed fingers won’t be able to straighten out or extend naturally. Some people’s pinkies are more bent than others since some cases are milder than others. It may require a health professional to identify this said condition.

Causes of Camptodactyly/Bent Pinky Fingers

There are a number of causes of this condition that comes with the deformity of the fingers. Some causes include contracted ligaments and contracted tendons, which one might initially think of as the cause. However, some causes may not seem too obvious at the time like tight skin and abnormal muscles. One cause of this condition that can easily be detected is irregularly shaped bones.

Common Incidence

There are those who wonder just how common does this condition occur within the general population. The truth is that the exact number of incidence of camptodactyly is definitely unknown. The best thing that we can ever come up with is a rough estimate of the incidence of this said condition. A good estimate would be one percent of the total general population. Of course, this estimate will have varying degrees in terms of accuracy.

From what is known, it is observed that camptodactyly is more frequent with the female population than that of the male. It has also been observed that most cases of getting bent pinky fingers are more likely sporadic. However, it has also been observed that there are patients who might have relatives or ancestors who have the very same condition. Do take note that this said condition can also be an element of one underlying syndrome one might be experiencing.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Do not try to diagnose camptodactyly on your own. Don’t jump to any conclusion if you find a friend or relative to have bent pinky fingers. If you suspect that you have this said condition you should see your doctor. Mild cases or deformities rarely cause any functional problems. Surgery is not usually recommended for such cases. You should solicit the aid of a treating physician for severe deformities.

Birthmarks are blemishes on the skin that develop before birth. To know why do people have birthmarks, it is important that to take a look at different theories concerning the causes of the appearance of birthmarks.

Known as marks that are seen on the skin of newborn babies, birthmarks are not hereditary and these can appear several weeks after birth. There are different myths concerning the development of these marks. Some people believe that these appear because the mother has cravings during her pregnancy that were not satisfied. For instance, if the craving of a pregnant woman for apple was not satisfied, her baby can have a birthmark with the shape of an apple. Another popular myth about the marks is that these are caused by having great fear during pregnancy.

Why do people have birthmarks? To answer this interesting question, it is important to explore the different theories surrounding the appearance of birthmarks. In addition to this, it is also essential to know the various types of these marks.

Theories

One of the theories that can answer the question why do people have birthmarks is that these are blood vessels, which have grown on the skin. According to some scientists, these marks are composed of cells that develop from the vessels’ inner lining. Other people believe that birthmarks were developed localized but imbalance factors that control the formation of blood vessels.

Types

There are six types of birthmarks. The first type is known as Café au lait spot. This type of birthmark appears on birth as well as in the early childhood years. This can appear anywhere on human skin. Another kind of this mark is the congenital melanocytic nevus. It appears on the skin around the neck and on the head. Fair-skinned individuals may have light brown birthmarks. On the other hand, those who have dark-skinned individuals may have black congenital melanocytic nevus.

One of the most popular types of birthmark is the Mongolian blue spot. This mark does not have regular shape and it has wavy borders. Mongolian blue spot is common among Turks, East Asians as well as Native Americans. Nevus flammeus is a kind of birthmark that is usually caused by insufficient nerve supply in the blood vessels that grow on the skin.

Stork bite is a type of mark on human skin that can appear on the forehead, neck, top lip and eyelids. Most stork bite marks disappear after the first year of life. The last kind of mark on human skin is known as strawberry mark. Above 80 per cent of strawberry marks can be seen on the neck area and head. The mark is characterized by red, raised and lumpy area on the skin.
