Interaction in the Family
The need for open contact and discussion begins in the family. From spouses to their offspring, it’s critical that they talk with each other. This won’t prevent problems or disagreements from taking place. However, the willingness to talk opens the door for solutions.
When family members don’t relay their feelings to one another, it creates an atmosphere of distrust. It plants the seed of doubt and can result in deep seated hate or guilt. Thus, the importance of communication; by keeping the lines open, you’ll be able to discuss the problem and nip it in the bud before it escalates.
Interaction in Business
The same holds true for business. We’re not just talking about sending an email or an instant message. Both employers and employees must be willing to talk about the future direction of the company. If there are problems in the company all relevant parties must be informed.
It’s hardly a secret that some businesses fail because financial records were kept hidden. Other common problems like wages and working hours often arise from lack of openness. The importance of communication is that it allows both to air their sides. Too often, people become polarized and emotional on these issues. As long as both sides are willing to talk, settlements can be reached more easily.
Interaction with Friends and Society
Of course your interaction with people doesn’t end with family or business colleagues. It extends to your friends. It’s essential you spend time to nourish and nurture friendships too. Keep in mind that friendship isn’t just about having fun all the time.
Remember, a true friend is someone who will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Be willing to listen. At the same time, you should be there for them in times of trouble. This of course, applies to lovers and family too.
Interaction with Yourself
The importance of communication includes self reflection. Don’t be afraid to spend some time thinking about or talking to yourself. Set aside some time after work to consider your plans.
Are you headed in the right direction, career wise? Are you being too easy on yourself, or too self critical? Being in touch with your inner self allows you to express your feelings more effectively. This in turn allows you to engage other people more effectively.
Some people may be hesitant about “talking with themselves”. You shouldn’t. One method you can use is to keep a journal. Write down your thoughts, feelings and goals. You can also write down questions about your life. Try to answer them honestly. All this, of course, is about opening up.
It isn’t enough to know the importance of communication. You must take the right steps. Reach out to others and yourself, and you’ll be better for it.
